Has the Bosnian Pyramids become a tourist trap?

Bosnia, Pyramids, Tourism / Thursday, March 8th, 2018

One of my favorite side trips in Bosnia has been the world famous healing Pyramids of Bosnia.  If they are real or not is irrelevant. The bigger question is how much money they can bring in for Bosnia and the local community surrounding the pyramids.

Number of Visitors to the Pyramids

According to a 2015 interview once they started charging for tickets in 2011 they got better numbers ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 visitors a year.

If we compare this with the average number of visitors Bosnia receives we see visitors in Bosnia have increased at relatively the same rate as those going to see the Pyramids.  In 2013 Bosnia had 400,000 foreign visitors and 40,000 visited the Pyramids.  That is roughly 1 in 10 visitors and if we factor in domestic tourists it would most likely reduce this in half.

Number of Visitors to Other Bosnian Tourist Sites

To see how popular the Pyramids have become lets see how many visitors have come to other tourist sites in Bosnia.

Kravice. In 2017 200,000 with other sites suggesting 75,000 normally in a season.

Jajce. In 20,000 to 55,000 tourists in 2012-2013.

Conclusion

Compared with other tourist destinations the Bosnian Pyramids don’t have as many visitors however its a relatively new tourist destination and new “discoveries” are occurring yearly.  Most visitors stay nearby in Sarajevo so hotels aren’t being constructed like in other areas.  We can speculate that the creation of this new tourist site does not take away visitors from other sites but instead adds more of a reason to visit Bosnia.
